Welcome to the Organic Management of BMSB Website/Wiki

This website is maintained by Dr. Matt Grieshop —the organic pest management specialist at Michigan State University— and Dr. Anne Nielsen, a post doctoral research associate at the MSU Organic Pest Management lab. The purpose of this website is to provide organic farmers and researchers with up to date information on the ongoing efforts to develop organic management plans for the brown marmorated stink bug. The website is currently under construction and many new features will be added.

Native Parasitoids Hold Promise in Stink Bug Defense

Here’s a link to an article about the recent workshop on “Parasitoids of Brown Marmorated Stink Bug,” held in Newark, Delaware:
Native Parasitoids Hold Promise in Stink Bug Defense. Researchers teach workshop participants to recognize natural enemies of brown marmorated stink bug, part of the strategy to control the invasive insect.

It was written by Chris Gonzales, our new staff writer at the Northeastern IPM Center. Please feel free to share the link with others.

Lab Spray Trial Results Using OMRI Products

USDA entomologist Dr. Tracy Leskey has released a report on the laboratory efficacy of a variety of OMRI approved insecticides for brown marmorated stink bug. Products that showed the most promise included Pyganic®, M-Pede®, and Entrust®. Pyganic® was especially effective when combined with Surround®. Of the compounds tested, only Pyganic® and Surround® are labeled for use for stink bugs. Surround®’s label specifies use in Pomme fruits.  Check product labels for crop labeling information. The full report can be downloaded here. You will need a PDF reader to view it.

Insecticide trials performed in the laboratory may not accurately reflect field efficacy. At present we still do not have any science based organic field recommendations.

Trap and Lure Sources for BMSB

Current scientific research suggests that pheromone traps are useful tools for monitoring brown marmorated stink bug, especially during the later part of the season. Claims made for mass trapping resulting in economic control of BMSB are not supported by published research at the time of this posting.

Two companies are now offering BMSB lures and traps.

AgBio Inc. has both lures and traps available that have been field tested by independent researchers. These products have been shown to be attractive to both adult and juvenile BMSB, primarily during the later part of the season.

AlphaScents is also selling lures and traps. To the best of our knowledge, these products have not been independently tested.

Researchers across the nation are working on developing management recommendations for BMSB. Any claims made by companies selling materials or information for BMSB control that do not provide evidence of independent evaluation should be carefully considered as research is still in its preliminary stages.

This post does not constitute a endorsement of any product or product manufacturer nor does it constitute a pest management recommendation.
